Smurfs, Cowboys & Aliens Battle to Near Draw

The new sci-fi western flick Cowboys & Aliens narrowly edged the live action/3d Smurfs movie to take the top spot at the box office. Cowboys & Aliens, whichs stars Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford and Olivia Wilde, opened with $36.4 Million to the Smurf’s $35.6 take. Captain America dropped to third, followed by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2, which became the 2nd movie to surpass $300 million this year. Captain America Breaks Harry Potter’s Spell

America’s most patriotic superhero, Captain America, fought past Harry Potter to claim the top spot over the weekend at the box office. The Marvel Comics superhero flick, the last in the lead in to next summer’s Avengers movie, stars Chris Evans as the title hero, Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter and Hugo Weaving as Red Skull. Captain America made $65.1 million, easily topping Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 2‘s weekend take of $47.4. Harry Potter Conjures Up Box Office Gold

Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows part 2, the final installment of the Harry Potter franchise cast a spell with moviegoers, raking in nearly $170 million over the weekend and breaking the previous record opening total held by The Dark Knight ($158.4). The franchise has now grossed $2.177 billion and is very close to surpassing Star Wars ($2.218 billion) as the top grossing franchise on all time. Transformers: Dark of the Moon became the first film of 2011 to pass $300 million, although it looks like The Deathly Hallows 2 will soon be joining them. The third part in the franchise brought in $116.4 Million (topping the Spider-Man 2 opening mark of $88 Million )for the weekend and has already amassed over $200 Million.
